Renewable Gas Production Program
Renewable Gas Production Program - Helpful background information to support your application
Under the Climate Change (Net Zero Future) Act 2023, NSW has legislated ambitious net zero targets to achieve net zero by 2050, while also ensuring a sustainable and fair future for the people, economy and environment of NSW.
As part of the NSW Renewable Fuel Strategy, $40 million is available in grant funding to support the commercial deployment of biomethane production facilities and associated infrastructure. The Renewable Gas Production Program aims to:
- expand the development of a biomethane market and supporting infrastructure in NSW
- support industrial facilities to fast-track emissions reductions by replacing natural gas with biomethane
- make biomethane more affordable and accessible for industrial users
- support fuel security, economic resilience and job creation
- position NSW as a leader in renewable energy and sustainable resources
- foster collaboration and knowledge-sharing across the sector to expand biomethane supply and improve cost efficiency.
The Renewable Gas Production Program supports the development of commercially mature, front-of-meter biomethane production facilities in NSW, with a focus on projects that:
- deliver cost-effective, large-scale biomethane for injection into the gas distribution network
- displace fossil gas use by high emitting industrial facilities, particularly where natural gas is used for high-temperature processes or as feedstock in applications that are not easily electrified.
The Renewable Gas Production Program will co-invest in projects across the full biomethane value chain that integrate feedstock preparation through to production, delivery and injection into the NSW gas network.
The Renewable Gas Production Program is part of the Industrial Decarbonisation Initiative and is administered by the NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy the Environment and Water.
